<p class="chapter-1"><span class="text Jas-4-1"><span class="chapternum">4 </span>What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30340" class="text Jas-4-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30341" class="text Jas-4-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.</span></p>

<p class="top-05"><span id="en-NIV-30345" class="text Jas-4-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30346" class="text Jas-4-8"><sup class="versenum">8 </sup>Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30347" class="text Jas-4-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30348" class="text Jas-4-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30349" class="text Jas-4-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30349d" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30349d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote d" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=james+4&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30349d">d</a>]</sup> or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30350" class="text Jas-4-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30351" class="text Jas-4-13">Boasting About Tomorrow</span></h3>
<p><span class="text Jas-4-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”</span> <span id="en-NIV-30352" class="text Jas-4-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30353" class="text Jas-4-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”</span> <span id="en-NIV-30354" class="text Jas-4-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30355" class="text Jas-4-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.</span></p>

<p class="chapter-1"><span class="text Jas-2-1"><span class="chapternum">2 </span>My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30296" class="text Jas-2-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30297" class="text Jas-2-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”</span> <span id="en-NIV-30298" class="text Jas-2-4"><sup class="versenum">4 </sup>have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30299" class="text Jas-2-5"><sup class="versenum">5 </sup>Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30300" class="text Jas-2-6"><sup class="versenum">6 </sup>But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30301" class="text Jas-2-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?</span></p>

<p><span id="en-NIV-30306" class="text Jas-2-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,</span> <span id="en-NIV-30307" class="text Jas-2-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30308" class="text Jas-2-14">Faith and Deeds</span></h3>
<p><span class="text Jas-2-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30309" class="text Jas-2-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30310" class="text Jas-2-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30311" class="text Jas-2-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30312" class="text Jas-2-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”</span></p>
<p><span class="text Jas-2-18">Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30313" class="text Jas-2-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30314" class="text Jas-2-20"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup>You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30314d" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30314d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote d" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%202&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30314d">d</a>]</sup>?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30315" class="text Jas-2-21"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30316" class="text Jas-2-22"><sup class="versenum">22 </sup>You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30317" class="text Jas-2-23"><sup class="versenum">23 </sup>And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30317e" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30317e&quot; title=&quot;See footnote e&quot;&gt;e&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote e" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%202&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30317e">e</a>]</sup> and he was called God’s friend.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30318" class="text Jas-2-24"><sup class="versenum">24 </sup>You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30319" class="text Jas-2-25"><sup class="versenum">25 </sup>In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30320" class="text Jas-2-26"><sup class="versenum">26 </sup>As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.</span></p>

<p><span id="en-NIV-30276" class="text Jas-1-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30277" class="text Jas-1-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30278" class="text Jas-1-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30279" class="text Jas-1-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30280" class="text Jas-1-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;</span> <span id="en-NIV-30281" class="text Jas-1-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30282" class="text Jas-1-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30283" class="text Jas-1-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30284" class="text Jas-1-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30285" class="text Jas-1-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30286" class="text Jas-1-19">Listening and Doing</span></h3>
<p><span class="text Jas-1-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,</span> <span id="en-NIV-30287" class="text Jas-1-20"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup>because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30288" class="text Jas-1-21"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30289" class="text Jas-1-22"><sup class="versenum">22 </sup>Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30290" class="text Jas-1-23"><sup class="versenum">23 </sup>Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror</span> <span id="en-NIV-30291" class="text Jas-1-24"><sup class="versenum">24 </sup>and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30292" class="text Jas-1-25"><sup class="versenum">25 </sup>But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30293" class="text Jas-1-26"><sup class="versenum">26 </sup>Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30294" class="text Jas-1-27"><sup class="versenum">27 </sup>Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.</span></p>

<p class="top-1"><span id="en-NIV-30661" class="text 3John-1-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30662" class="text 3John-1-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30663" class="text 3John-1-4"><sup class="versenum">4 </sup>I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30664" class="text 3John-1-5"><sup class="versenum">5 </sup>Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30664a" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30664a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote a" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=3%20John%201&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30664a">a</a>]</sup> even though they are strangers to you.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30665" class="text 3John-1-6"><sup class="versenum">6 </sup>They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30666" class="text 3John-1-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30667" class="text 3John-1-8"><sup class="versenum">8 </sup>We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30668" class="text 3John-1-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30669" class="text 3John-1-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>So when I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30670" class="text 3John-1-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30671" class="text 3John-1-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30672" class="text 3John-1-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30673" class="text 3John-1-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.</span></p>

<p class="top-05"><span class="text 2John-1-1">To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth—</span> <span id="en-NIV-30648" class="text 2John-1-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:</span></p>
<p class="top-05"><span id="en-NIV-30649" class="text 2John-1-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.</span></p>
<p class="top-1"><span id="en-NIV-30650" class="text 2John-1-4"><sup class="versenum">4 </sup>It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30651" class="text 2John-1-5"><sup class="versenum">5 </sup>And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30652" class="text 2John-1-6"><sup class="versenum">6 </sup>And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3><span id="en-NIV-30626" class="text 1John-5-1">Faith in the Incarnate Son of God</span></h3>
<p class="chapter-1"><span class="text 1John-5-1"><span class="chapternum">5 </span>Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30627" class="text 1John-5-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30628" class="text 1John-5-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,</span> <span id="en-NIV-30629" class="text 1John-5-4"><sup class="versenum">4 </sup>for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30630" class="text 1John-5-5"><sup class="versenum">5 </sup>Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30631" class="text 1John-5-6"><sup class="versenum">6 </sup>This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30632" class="text 1John-5-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>For there are three that testify:</span> <span id="en-NIV-30633" class="text 1John-5-8"><sup class="versenum">8 </sup>the<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30633a" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30633a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote a" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%205&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30633a">a</a>]</sup> Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30634" class="text 1John-5-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30635" class="text 1John-5-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30636" class="text 1John-5-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30637" class="text 1John-5-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30638" class="text 1John-5-13">Concluding Affirmations</span></h3>
<p><span class="text 1John-5-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30639" class="text 1John-5-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30640" class="text 1John-5-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30641" class="text 1John-5-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30642" class="text 1John-5-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30643" class="text 1John-5-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30644" class="text 1John-5-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30645" class="text 1John-5-20"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup>We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30646" class="text 1John-5-21"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.</span></p>

<p class="chapter-1"><span class="text 1John-4-1"><span class="chapternum">4 </span>Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30606" class="text 1John-4-2"><sup class="versenum">2 </sup>This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,</span> <span id="en-NIV-30607" class="text 1John-4-3"><sup class="versenum">3 </sup>but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.</span></p>

<h3><span id="en-NIV-30611" class="text 1John-4-7">God’s Love and Ours</span></h3>
<p><span class="text 1John-4-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30612" class="text 1John-4-8"><sup class="versenum">8 </sup>Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30613" class="text 1John-4-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30614" class="text 1John-4-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30615" class="text 1John-4-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30616" class="text 1John-4-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30617" class="text 1John-4-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30618" class="text 1John-4-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30619" class="text 1John-4-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30620" class="text 1John-4-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.</span></p>
<p><span class="text 1John-4-16">God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30621" class="text 1John-4-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30622" class="text 1John-4-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30623" class="text 1John-4-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>We love because he first loved us.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30624" class="text 1John-4-20"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup>Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30625" class="text 1John-4-21"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.</span></p>

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30589" class="text 1John-3-9"><sup class="versenum">9 </sup>No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30590" class="text 1John-3-10"><sup class="versenum">10 </sup>This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30591" class="text 1John-3-11">More on Love and Hatred</span></h3>
<p><span class="text 1John-3-11"><sup class="versenum">11 </sup>For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30592" class="text 1John-3-12"><sup class="versenum">12 </sup>Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30593" class="text 1John-3-13"><sup class="versenum">13 </sup>Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30593b" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30593b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote b" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%203&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30593b">b</a>]</sup> if the world hates you.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30594" class="text 1John-3-14"><sup class="versenum">14 </sup>We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30595" class="text 1John-3-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30596" class="text 1John-3-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30597" class="text 1John-3-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?</span> <span id="en-NIV-30598" class="text 1John-3-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30599" class="text 1John-3-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:</span> <span id="en-NIV-30600" class="text 1John-3-20"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup>If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30601" class="text 1John-3-21"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God</span> <span id="en-NIV-30602" class="text 1John-3-22"><sup class="versenum">22 </sup>and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30603" class="text 1John-3-23"><sup class="versenum">23 </sup>And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30604" class="text 1John-3-24"><sup class="versenum">24 </sup>The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.</span></p>

<p><span id="en-NIV-30558" class="text 1John-2-7"><sup class="versenum">7 </sup>Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30559" class="text 1John-2-8"><sup class="versenum">8 </sup>Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.</span></p>

<p><span class="text 1John-2-15"><sup class="versenum">15 </sup>Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father<sup class="footnote" style="font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;" data-fn="#fen-NIV-30566d" data-link="[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-30566d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;/a&gt;]">[<a title="See footnote d" href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%202&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30566d">d</a>]</sup> is not in them.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30567" class="text 1John-2-16"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30568" class="text 1John-2-17"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30569" class="text 1John-2-18">Warnings Against Denying the Son</span></h3>
<p><span class="text 1John-2-18"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup>Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30570" class="text 1John-2-19"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup>They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.</span></p>

Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30574" class="text 1John-2-23"><sup class="versenum">23 </sup>No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30575" class="text 1John-2-24"><sup class="versenum">24 </sup>As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30576" class="text 1John-2-25"><sup class="versenum">25 </sup>And this is what he promised us—eternal life.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30577" class="text 1John-2-26"><sup class="versenum">26 </sup>I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.</span> <span id="en-NIV-30578" class="text 1John-2-27"><sup class="versenum">27 </sup>As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.</span></p>
<h3><span id="en-NIV-30579" class="text 1John-2-28">God’s Children and Sin</span></h3>
<p><span class="text 1John-2-28"><sup class="versenum">28 </sup>And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.</span></p>
<p><span id="en-NIV-30580" class="text 1John-2-29"><sup class="versenum">29 </sup>If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.</span></p>
